Bargeman Dub is a song that draws its inspiration from the Jean Vigo film L’Atalante. The movie is about a couple who marry and begin their life together on a Barge with a crazy guy called Jules, a barge boy, and a bunch of cats. Their home floats continuously. Jules causes friction. The bargeman puts his head in the water, then his body in the water, looking for his true love’s countenance—because it takes place underwater, we found this scene to be totally irreproducible in song. We wanted the song to sound like a combination of honkey tonk and Buju Banton-esque 90s dancehall pop.
